Armenian is an Indo-European language, which has developed separately with some unique sound changes not shared by other members of the language family. Structurally, it has acquired an agglutinative character, probably due to influence from neighboring languagues.

Armenian is written with the Armenian alphabet brought into use in the early fifth century. Although very distinct, the alphabet exhibits some similarity to the Greek and Syriac scripts.

There are two main varieties of Armenian: Western and Eastern Armenian that show some differences in grammar and pronunciation. Being the official variety of Armenia, the Eastern variety is currently the most used one. It is also the main language of the Armenian diaspora in Iran. Western Armenian was the main variety in the Ottoman Empire, and is now used by most of the diaspora in Lebanon and the West.
