The name ‘Urdu’ stems from the classification zabān-e urdū-e mu‘alla meaning ‘the language of the exalted camp’, referring to an encampment market in Delhi. Many linguist consider Urdu and Hindi to be two sociolects (Muslim and Hindu respectively) of the same language. The grammar is practically the same, as well as the core vocabulary. In the higher registers, Urdu, however, draws very much on Persian and Arabic, whereas Hindi draws on Sanskrit. The two languages also use different scripts.

Urdu is probably most known to be the language of Pakistan. The languages was however not natively spoken in the area when British India was divided into Pakistan and India, but was brought there by the Muslim immigrants. Currently, Urdu is spoken natively in the city of Karachi and works as a lingua franca elsewhere in the country. Most native speakers live in India.
