Hungarian is an odd fellow in Central Europe. Being surrounded by Indo-European languages (from different branches), Hungarian has its closest relative (Khanty and Mansi) away in Western Siberia. It’s supposed that speakers of Hungarian became nomadic and then settled at the north-eastern coast of the Black Sea where they came into contact with Turkic tribes (and borrowed some words from them) before they entered the Pannonian Basin in 896 AD, most of which forms today’s Hungarian language area.

The language family to which Hungarian belongs (Finno-Ugrian) owns it name partly from Hungarian and partly from another European language: Finnish. Many people can hear a kinship between those to language, but it’s not because of a similar vocabulary; both languages have lost much of the inherited words. The phonology, however, shows some similar and typical features: both languages have endings where most Indo-Euopean languages have prepositions, there is a vowel harmony and always stress on the first syllable of a word - a word which can be very long because of the endings and the possibility to build compounds. Both languages also have long and short vowels and consonants.
